Today is World Habitat Day, designated by the United Nations to help promote Habitat for Humanity’s mission of safe, decent, and affordable shelter for all people. It’s a mission that we at Rebuilding Together also share.
Whether it involves helping an elderly low-income Oakland homeowner to age in place in a home that is warm, safe, and dry, or traveling to Haiti to assist Habitat in their ongoing earthquake recovery efforts, the need for quality shelter is both urgent and widespread. Getting your hands dirty on an RTO or Habitat worksite (or volunteering in an office) is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people, and make a real difference — one that you can see, and one that homeowners will never forget.
